Preparing Your Outdoor Space For Fall

Posted on

It may still be summer, but fall is just around the corner, so it’s time to start thinking about how to prepare your outdoor space for the changing weather. As fun as summer barbecues probably were on your back deck, it’s time to embrace the season of pumpkins, light sweaters, and changing leaves. Here are the steps you should take to prepare your outdoor space, including your outdoor furniture, for fall.

Decorate for fall

Rattan high chairs

If you are still looking to purchase a patio set for your outdoor space. A good choice would be an all-weather set. Especially if you live in area that has all of the seasons. Selecting outdoor furniture can be overwhelming. Here are a two different styles you can choose from.

Rattan chairs are very stylish. The rattan bark is preserved making the chairs suitable for outdoor and indoor use. The woven seats and backs and the bindings are all made of Polystrand synthetic fiber. Most chairs are stackable.

Metal bistro furniture is very versatile and colorful. Available in mostly 23 vibrant colors, this sturdy steel furniture makes an inviting addition to any patio setting. Plus, with its High Protection finish, an Anti-UV powder coat and foot protectors for rough surfaces, it’s been crafted specifically for outdoor use.

Prepare for next year

At first, you may not see how these are related, but if your gutters are backed up, your lawn may face flooding or other issues due to seasonal rains this fall. Gutters can become especially clogged over the summer, so it is important that you clean them out before the fall comes. While you are up there, check to be sure there are no missing shingles from the top of your roof, which may cause problems down the road, and takes away from the aesthetic of your home.

Re-mulch your yard around trees, shrubs, or other plants to help them thrive in the cool months ahead. This will help them maintain moisture as well, which is especially important if you live in a drier climate.

Make sure to get one last trim in before the weather gets too cold so your yard is looking its best when fall comes around.

It's time to clean!

Teak cleaner

After a summer of entertaining, your patio is probably in desperate need of some attention. Start by thoroughly cleaning it.Sweep up any dust and debris, then use a pressure washer or garden hose to rinse it down your balcony or patio.

After you have cleaned it, you have a good opportunity to re-stain your patio if it is looking a little worse for wear. Even if you think it could go a little while without being re-stained, it is a good idea to seal your patio before the fall. This way, your patio is prepared to take any rain without damage.

Next, you will want to prepare your outdoor furniture for the change in weather. You can clean most patio furniture using a mild detergent and water. Address any areas of rust or faded paint now because they will only get worse if you neglect them over the fall. I like to clean my furniture with teak cleaner and protector to prepare for next summer.

Clean any stains on your cushions, and wash the covers if possible. If you don’t want to use your patio furniture this fall, you may consider storing them in a garage or shed for the colder months. If you don’t have a space for them, patio furniture covers will help protect your furniture from the elements as well.

If you have a grill and don’t intend to use it during the colder months, you should also make a point to condition your grill with a lubricant so it won’t rust over the winter.
